LYF participates in Parliamentary Committee on African Agriculture

All Party Parliamentary Group on Agriculture and Food for Development Update (Education, Training and Capacity Building)

We went along to the session on Education, Training and Capacity Building last week where the discussions centred around how to scale up the delivery of education and extension services in agriculture and how to make information accessible to farmers and in particular smallholders. We heard about an array of initiatives from researchers, academics and the VSO… as well as our very own Ian Agnew who talked about our work with schools in Malawi where we are promoting an agribusiness model for young people and the Smallholder Support Network as a replicable model. The Panel then came up with their wish list about what they would focus on:

–          Set up demonstration units with farmers training farmers

–          DFID should recognise that all farmers are not the same

–          Invest in young people

–          Offer a small grant window to support students in agriculture

–          Improve the quality of training and support given to extension officers

–          Extend these services to women

–          Strengthen institutional governance in Africa

–          Link in entrepreneurship
