A message from Hannah, our wonderful John Lewis Partnership Volunteer

Written by Hannah Mitchell, Lorna Young Secondee from Cardiff

 More than just a secondment…

I applied for a secondment with the Lorna Young Foundation (LYF) because I wanted to share my knowledge as a journalist with a charity that could benefit from the help.

I admired the LYF’s passion, determination and believed in the aims they stood for.

During my six months with the charity as a media, information and communications volunteer, I have seen the LYF grow from strength to strength. After months of hard work and planning, the charity created a brand new website which symbolised a new era for them. They were able to re-brand their charity and provide it with a fresh look with clear, concise goals. I was responsible for designing a seasonal newsletter which tied in with the launch of the website.

Other tasks I was involved in included establishing social media sites for them, creating an informative leaflet for smallholder coffee growers in Kenya and writing a series of press releases to help spread the word of the LYF’s great work. I received amazing support from the LYF; even though I worked from home, they were always easily contactable and were on hand to provide useful advice.

I felt very proud to be associated with this charity and would recommend volunteering to anyone. You don’t need a wealth of experience and it doesn’t even have to be for a lengthy amount of time – your company may even sponsor you. I have left this rewarding secondment armed with new skills to bring back to my role as a journalist and I couldn’t be more grateful.
