St Albans Abbey Buys Oromo Coffee

From the 2nd March 2011, customers at the Café at the Abbey at St Albans Cathedral will be able to enjoy coffee from the UK’s first Fairtrade and Organic coffee social enterprise – the Oromo Coffee Company!

The Oromo Coffee Company was initiated in 2009 by the Lorna Young Foundation foll…owing a request for help from refugees from Oromo, Ethiopia. It is the first ever refugee owned Fairtrade/Organic coffee and is run as a social enterprise and has been praised by Harriet Lamb OBE, Chief Executive of The Fairtrade Foundation, for bringing ‘a great new concept to the world’.

The Reverend Canon Kevin Walton said;
“When we heard of this unique new venture, we were delighted to be able to team up with the Oromo Coffee Company. This way, our own community here at St Albans Cathedral has a direct link with the community of Ethiopian farmers, ensuring a fantastic quality of coffee for the customer at a fair price for the producer.”
