One of the negative things I noticed was that the farmers were being abused and mistreated by the large corporations. When we did that coffee simulation on the movie’s website, I was appalled at how much of the profit the farmers actually get. They work so hard and gain so little In relation to Mr. Lathan’s question “Does this make you angry at popular coffee chains, such as Starbucks?”, I’m not exactly angry because we’ve gotten so use to following this system that it’s become natural. But if you look at it from an ethical stand point, it is wrong and a change in this system is long overdue! I will admit there were slow parts in the movie where I dozed off during, but overall it was substantial.

There were parts in this dtmucenoary that I really thought were interesting such as free trade and how coffee is utilized in different ways to improve lives. A label alone isn't enough. Shoppers need much more detailed, compelling information so they know for sure whether those that provide their food have enough to eat for themselves. It's my biggest criticism of Fairtrade: lack of information. A 'Fairtrade' sticker alone isn't sufficient to win hearts and minds...and shopper's sentiments. We were the first to import ethically sourced coffee to the UK back in 1976. It was years before Fairtrade started… But we created a stir when we shipped almost 3 tonnes of instant coffee from Tanzania to the UK to help support manufacturing in the Third World. Our labelling was unique, and featured a photo of a pile of coins, showing who-got-what for the price of a jar of coffee. With the coffee came a booklet called, "The World In Your Coffee Cup." We provided sufficient reading material to last several cups of coffee! Last month BBC radio interviewed me about our pioneering ‘Campaign Coffee’, that helped to start the idea of ethically sourced coffee in Great Britain. The broadcast is now available on YouTube (4 minutes):http://youtu.be/4qiHw40CubY

The graphic powerfully demonstrates what we already knew: Fairtrade represents the tiniest drop in a huge ocean of coffee.

My view? I have listened practically to all the radio program on air since they started in Coro FM. The content is truly informative to coffee smallholders, not just in Nyeri region, but also the surrounding regions where coffee is grown. LYF is doing what the government of Kenya used to do in the 80s and early 90. During these decades, the government broadcast on National radio programs about coffee and tea. Congratulations LYF!

I live in Nairobi Kenya. I have listened practically to all the radio program on air since they started in Coro FM. I have been following them for a while and I don't get why the lorna Young foundation doesnt get more attention from the media and such as they could really do some good for the foundation.I personally ,get sick of hearing people complaining that they wont give money to the big charities and ngo's 'cause the money is being wasted on administration stuff and big campaigns. I agree with all of that but i think people should put their money where their mouth is and sending donations to something like the Lorna Young foundation - like, a small charity that really is doing things that are being overlooked - is one way of showing that you give a damn and that you want the money you send off to be spent as it should be.

You’re right Gail. Why some of the bigger charities and fair trade companies are not supporting you I do not know (or maybe they are and you are just quiet about it!!!!) Anyway - I also saw your newsletter and think that you are all an amazing inspiration. Well done you and I hope you have many successes - you obviously have an affinity for working with the people who matter!!

Can I just say that this is the best thing I have read in a long time.
